Game of My Life: Kentucky

Game of My Life: Kentucky
Memorable Stories of Wildcat Basketball
Ryan Clark

DESCRIPTION

Before every important basketball game in Kentucky, a murmur builds from the hills of Harlan to the city parks of Louisville: “Do the Wildcats have what it takes to win the big one?” That question has been pondered by University of Kentucky fans for ages. Finally, there’s a book that points the question at the players themselves.

In Game of My Life: Kentucky, author Ryan Clark talks to those players at the heart and soul of the Big Blue, sharing each player’s extensive thoughts on the biggest game of his college career. Louisville native Derek Anderson remembers his greatest test against the Wildcats’ chief in-state rival, the Cardinals. Evansville, Indiana native Walter McCarty describes his breakout game, which came in a legendary comeback against LSU that he still uses to motivate himself today. And Lexington native Goose Givens recalls how he was able to deliver UK’s greatest clutch performance in the 1978 NCAA title game against Duke.

All told, 30 former Wildcats—a Who’s Who list including legends like Ralph Beard, Louie Dampier, Rick Robey, Sam Bowie, Jamal Mashburn, Tony Delk, Scott Padgett, and Tayshaun Prince—relive their defining moment at Kentucky. Each hand-picked story—told in the player’s own voice—is sure to provide Kentucky fans with a new appreciation for the grandest games in Big Blue lore.

USA TODAY Year in Sports 2007

USA TODAY Year in Sports 2007
USA TODAY

DESCRIPTION
The best games, the biggest stories, the brightest stars. From football on New Year’s Day to the final out of the World Series, USA TODAY Year in Sports 2007 has it covered, providing the answer to the age-old question: What to get for the sports fan who has it all?

The year 2007 brought a host of fresh faces into the sports world, from Dice-K and Lewis Hamilton to Angel Cabrera and a filly named Rags to Riches. Some required little introduction, like Mr. and Mrs. David Beckham. One in particular—Rick Ankiel—revisited us as a flash from the past, then made his case to stick around for a while. And some familiar stars sought out new beginnings: Kevin Garnett, Randy Moss and Dale Earnhardt Jr.

It was a year for milestones, too. Bobby Knight won No. 880. Lorena Ochoa won her first major. Brett Favre threw No. 421. The Florida Gators toppled Ohio State in the big game not once, but twice. And in a wonderful year for the long ball, three major leaguers passed 500.

Several enduring storylines became a part of our daily water cooler discussion. Was Michael Vick really guilty of the heinous allegations? Was Floyd Landis becoming cycling’s sacrificial pig? Would Joe Torre be back in pinstripes next year? When would Bonds break the record, and would an asterisk be necessary?

The losses, from Barbaro to Bill Walsh, were particularly poignant. So too were the snapshots from one of sports’ sadder moments: teams of collegians in Blacksburg returning to the field less than a week after the Virginia Tech mass murder.

But on the whole, the Year in Sports gave us reason to smile. We were reminded of one thing that is hard to forget: an upset is grounds for celebration. Our series of reminders came from the likes of Appalachian State, Virginia Commonwealth and the Golden State Warriors.

Welcome to the stories that shaped our Year in Sports.

Pat Williams' Tales from the Philadelphia 76ers

Pat Williams' Tales from the Philadelphia 76ers
Pat Williams with Gordon Jones

DESCRIPTION

The Sixers won 65 games and an NBA championship in 1982-83, still one of the finest seasons in NBA history. It was Moses Malone who, in the days before the playoffs, gave the team its battle cry. Asked by coach Billy Cunningham how he thought things would go in the playoffs, Moses said, “Fo’, fo’, fo’” – meaning, in Moses’ shorthand, that he expected the Sixers to sweep each of the three series they would need to play in order to win a championship. In Pat Williams’ Tales from the 76ers, the former Sixers general manager writes about those Sixers – the transcendent talents (and personalities like Julius Erving, Bobby Jones, Maurice Cheeks, and Andrew Toney) that made them special, the years of heartache that preceded the championship run, and a season that was surprisingly devoid of drama. Chico Resch's Tales from the Devils Ice

Chico Resch's Tales from the Devils Ice
Glenn Chico Resch with Mike Kerwick

Description:

From the moment Dr. John McMullen brought professional hockey to New Jersey to the moment Scott Stevens lifted the Stanley Cup over his head for the third time, the Garden State has been in love with its New Jersey Devils. In Chico Resch’s Tales from the Devils Ice, former New Jersey goalie Chico Resch and co-author Mike Kerwick bring readers along for a wild ride from the lean early seasons to the three Stanley Cup championships. The book has it all, including details about John MacLean’s game winner against Chicago, the goal that propelled the Devils into the playoffs for the first time; Ken Daneyko’s emotional curtain call in Game 7 of the 2003 Stanley Cup Finals; and Martin Brodeur’s yearly playoff dominance. Resch and Kerwick spent the 2003-04 season talking to players past and present, searching for the stories behind the stories. They provide answers to questions like: Why did teammates shove a shaving-cream pie in defenseman Colin White’s face during a practice in Columbus? Why did Garry Howatt serve as an official linesman while he was still on the Devils roster? And why did Kirk Muller receive a phony subpoena when he was a little late paying for auto body work on his car? Fans will not have to wonder about questions like those any longer. Chico Resch’s Tales from the Devils Ice is an easy skate through Devils history, revealing insights behind the stories fans have heard and many others they have not heard until now.

Game of My Life: San Francisco 49ers

Game of My Life: San Francisco
Memorable Stories of 49ers Football

Dennis Georgatos

DESCRIPTION

Gary Plummer was still fuming over a botched play, unaware that redemption was only seconds away. Steve Young made good on football’s grandest stage to finally break free of Joe Montana’s shadow. Jerry Rice played a central role in the drama of Montana’s greatest Super Bowl drive. Dwight Hicks had a hand in the victory that helped set the course toward the 49ers’ first championship.

These players and many others, along with Hall of Fame Coach Bill Walsh, helped shape the club’s fate over its 61-year history. In this book, the players and Coach Walsh recall the games that mattered most, both to them and to the team. The 49ers dominated the NFL during a 20-year run that began when Walsh led them to their first league title in 1981. As the years passed, they continued winning, adding four more Super Bowl titles along the way.

But the story of this team goes beyond the winning and the championships. There are the 49ers pioneers whose play and personality in the team’s formative years helped forge bonds that endure today. The legacy of players such as Joe Perry and Gordy Soltau lives on in their modern counterparts, from Roger Craig and Jerry Rice to Garrison Hearst and Bryant Young. They are the forbears of an ever-changing group striving to follow in the footsteps of a championship legacy and a tradition born on the gridiron, marked by great games and great players, many of them showcased in Game of My Life: San Francisco 49ers.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Dennis Georgatos was raised in the Northern California town of Pleasanton, where he learned to play football on tree-lined streets as the favorite receiver of his older brother, Dean. A 1978 graduate of the University of California at Berkeley, he has been a reporter for United Press International, the Associated Press, and The San Jose Mercury News for more than 25 years. He covered the 49ers for AP and The Mercury News for the past 16 years, a tumultuous span that included the team’s fifth Super Bowl title, an ownership change, the dawn of the salary cap era, the crumbling of a dynasty, and the struggle to reclaim past glory. Georgatos is also the author of an anecdotal history of the team titled Stadium Stories: San Francisco 49ers (2005).

One Moment Changes Everything: The All-America Tragedy of Don Rogers

One Moment Changes Everything
The All-America Tragedy of Don Rogers

Sean D. Harvey

DESCRIPTION

Don Rogers was a three-sport phenomenon who energized a forgotten corner of the world (North Sacramento). He could run, jump and tackle better than anyone in California. A role model to children, he became both an honor student and a consensus All- American football player for UCLA, where he dominated two Rose Bowls and was a favorite of fans and sportswriters alike. Rogers went on to become a first-round draft pick of the Cleveland Browns and was voted rookie of the year in 1984.

Then it fell apart. Just one week after the overdose death of basketball star Len Bias, and only one day before his marriage to his college sweetheart, while in the upstairs bedroom of his mother’s home Rogers made the incomprehensible decision to use cocaine, and died just hours later. This All-American story is about a good man whose life transcended sports, and whose death continues to spur important debate about burden, love, addiction, responsibility, and what constitutes happiness in the material world.

Bill Walsh: Remembering The Genius

Bill Walsh
Remembering The Genius

Sports Publishing LLC

Description

Pete Carroll called him an "extraordinary mentor". Bill Parcells recalled "One of the guys who made the NFL what it is". Joe Montana simply said, "Outside of my dad, he was probably the most influential person in my life". Bill Walsh simply considered himself a teacher. When the legendary former San Francisco 49ers coach passed away on July 30, 2007, at age 75, he was fondly remembered across the nation as one of the great innovators of the game of football.

A Pro Football Hall of Famer and a two-time NFL Coach of the Year, Walsh led the 49ers to 102 wins and three Super Bowl titles in 10 seasons as head coach in the 1980's. His signature West Coast offense and contributions to minority coaching forever changed the NFL. His coaching tree of former assistants is a "Who's Who?" of NFL head coaches, including Mike Holmgren, Mike White, Sam Wyche, Bruce Coslet, George Seifert, and Dennis Green. Walsh also made significant contributions to Stanford University during two stints as head coach in the late 70's and early 90's. Former 49ers star Ronnie Lott remarked that his first head coach will be "forever cemented with the likes of George Halas, Paul Brown, and Vince Lombardi as the best ever". In Bill Walsh: Remembering "The Genius", Bay Area fans can celebrate Walsh's amazing life through pictures and words, including numerous looks back at his tremendous career.

The Making of McPaper
USA TODAY

DESCRIPTION
In 1982 the Gannett Company, the nation’s biggest newspaper chain, launched USA TODAY. USA TODAY celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2007. The brainchild of Al Neuharth, it was the most expensive, most closely watched newspaper debut in history.
