Game of My Life: San Francisco 49ers

Game of My Life: San Francisco
Memorable Stories of 49ers Football

Dennis Georgatos

DESCRIPTION

Gary Plummer was still fuming over a botched play, unaware that redemption was only seconds away. Steve Young made good on football’s grandest stage to finally break free of Joe Montana’s shadow. Jerry Rice played a central role in the drama of Montana’s greatest Super Bowl drive. Dwight Hicks had a hand in the victory that helped set the course toward the 49ers’ first championship.

These players and many others, along with Hall of Fame Coach Bill Walsh, helped shape the club’s fate over its 61-year history. In this book, the players and Coach Walsh recall the games that mattered most, both to them and to the team. The 49ers dominated the NFL during a 20-year run that began when Walsh led them to their first league title in 1981. As the years passed, they continued winning, adding four more Super Bowl titles along the way.

But the story of this team goes beyond the winning and the championships. There are the 49ers pioneers whose play and personality in the team’s formative years helped forge bonds that endure today. The legacy of players such as Joe Perry and Gordy Soltau lives on in their modern counterparts, from Roger Craig and Jerry Rice to Garrison Hearst and Bryant Young. They are the forbears of an ever-changing group striving to follow in the footsteps of a championship legacy and a tradition born on the gridiron, marked by great games and great players, many of them showcased in Game of My Life: San Francisco 49ers.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Dennis Georgatos was raised in the Northern California town of Pleasanton, where he learned to play football on tree-lined streets as the favorite receiver of his older brother, Dean. A 1978 graduate of the University of California at Berkeley, he has been a reporter for United Press International, the Associated Press, and The San Jose Mercury News for more than 25 years. He covered the 49ers for AP and The Mercury News for the past 16 years, a tumultuous span that included the team’s fifth Super Bowl title, an ownership change, the dawn of the salary cap era, the crumbling of a dynasty, and the struggle to reclaim past glory. Georgatos is also the author of an anecdotal history of the team titled Stadium Stories: San Francisco 49ers (2005).
